California Nebula (NGC1499)
November 2 - 3, 2024 (Cherry Springs, PA)
The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is a large emission nebula located about 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Perseus. It is named for its resemblance to the shape of the U.S. state of California. The nebula spans about 100 light-years and is primarily composed of hydrogen gas, which is ionized by the radiation from a hot, young star known as Xi Persei. The nebula's striking red color comes from hydrogen emission, and it is a prominent example of a bright star-forming region in the Milky Way.
